President-Elect Joe Biden has big plans for his first day in office which he has indicating will including unveiling a comprehensive immigration plan, providing a multi-year pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants. DACA recipients, or so called “Dreamers,” could also soon have the opportunity to become U.S. citizens. Under Biden’s proposal, the pathway would be streamlined, allowing them to apply for a green card immediately– something they’ve never been able to do. Dreamers are hopeful this proposed bill will pass through Congress.
For Dreamers across the United States, the past four years have been difficult. But all the while, they are paying taxes as valuable members of the workforce – despite technically being here unlawfully. But for the first time in a while, things are looking up for them as President-Elect Joe Biden plans to unveil a new immigration plan on day one of his administration. Dreamers, or those who arrived in the U.S. illegally as children, could qualify to apply for a green card immediately. Many with DACA status have been stressed over the past four years that they may lose their status. Hopefully, this cloud of uncertainty will begin to lift quickly with the new administration.
Aside from helping Dreamers, the plan would also allow certain undocumented immigrants to achieve citizenship within eight years. It would give certain immigrants temporary status for five years and allow them to apply for green cards. Then after meeting certain criteria, they could apply for citizenship three years later.
