A 27-year old Latino man who was granted Deferred Action status as a Childhood Arrival, was not allowed to register at Trident Technical College in North Charleston because the college said it was complying with their own State law.
President of Trident Technical College, Dr. Mary Thornley said, “We want to be the place of opportunity for all students who want to improve their lives through education and training. However, we have no choice when it comes to complying with state and federal law.”
However, the College’s President is incorrect as DACA applicants are not considered to be in illegal status once they have been approved. Last month, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services clarified that immigrants approved under DACA are lawfully present in the United States.
